Scottish Huntingtons Association Illustrated Pages

Fundraising Roots

Like all charities, the association benefits greatly from it's fundraisers. People with Huntington’s disease, their families and their friends provide a foundation to maintain and develop our essential services. People have raised funds in many ways in the past. Sponsored events are an ideal way to take part. Fundraising at school and the workplace help raise funds and educate others about the effects of HD. Sustaining the SHA - A Fundraising Challenge

The Scottish Huntington's Association has a number of highly committed fundraisers who do an incredible job of supporting our services.

We are also grateful to receive almost 40% of our funding from health boards and local authorities who have no legal responsibility to fund our work.

BUT

The combination of secrecy and poverty amongst our beneficiaries means that:

· We receive virtually no corporate donations because so many of our beneficiaries are unemployed.

· Workplace fundraising is rare because people who do work often need to keep their connection with HD a secret.

· Community fundraising by our supporters is stifled by secrecy and the overwhelming stress of their personal circumstances.

· Public awareness of HD is very low and so donations from the public are few.

· Our total legacy income received in the 18 years since our foundation in 1989 is £100,000 which includes a single legacy of £60,000 received in 2006.

In the current year to March 2008, £250,000 in grants from the Lottery and Children in Need are coming to an end. The services we provide are absolutely vital to the well-being of hundreds of families affected by HD in Scotland. We need your help to ensure that our work continues.

Great Scottish Walk 2008:
Glasgow 25 May 2008
Edinburgh 22 June 2008

Last year saw in excess of 100 walkers taking part and raising
money for the Scottish Huntington's Association.

New for 2008 – a second walk has been added to the schedule to take place at Glasgow Green and like the original Edinburgh walk offers a choice of three distances that walkers can choose to complete according to their ability levels - 1 mile, 6 miles or 12 miles.
